I photographed Tara & Tom's wedding earlier this summer. They were married on Lake Minnetonka, so it seemed very fitting that we would do a photo session on the beach when the returned from their honeymoon. We had so much fun-Thank you Tara & Tom!

I recently had the pleasure of meeting the Saint Paul portrait & wedding photographer & am very excited to have her join our Trash The Dress Minnesota group, and to also have her join me as a second shooter on some of my upcoming weddings! Q & A:
Where do you live? I grew up on a farm in Lake Elmo, but my husband and I moved to St. Paul in 2005.
How long have you been shooting? Professionally since 2007, but of course have been shooting since I was a kid.
Favorite place to shoot? Fort Snelling is awesome, and offers many different settings to shoot in.
How would you describe your style? Classically modern
Best part of being a wedding photographer? I love the connection I make each of my bride and grooms, their wedding day ends up being just as special to me as it is to them.
Would you trash your dress? YES!
What advice do you have for future brides? Relax! And be sure to spend at least 15 minutes alone with your new husband. You’ll be so busy talking to guests you won’t get a chance to see each other the whole night.
What advice do you have for other photographers? Be patient, and be prepared for unexpected expenses!
I have never… thought in a million years I would get to do what I love as a career
I’m looking forward… the next few years it will take to build my business, this is all such a wonderful learning experience.
I would like to meet… Dorothea Lange if she were still alive
I’m addicted to… Photography forums, wakeboarding, yoga and trying new restaurants.
Why/How did you decide to go into photography? I have been doing photography as a hobby for years and when I was at a crossroads in my career last year I thought why don’t I do something I am passionate about. Gruman Photography was born!
Where do you see yourself 10 years from now? Still doing photography, still living in St. Paul (I love the city life), hopefully have a studio up and running by then and maybe a few kids!
Who do you admire? My father for never giving up on his dream to own his own restaurant on the North Shore. He got to live out his dream 3 years before he died of cancer.
What makes a perfect trash the dress session? Sunshine, a few clouds, a beautiful gown, interesting location and a bride who really gets into it!
Where do you get your inspiration from? Music especially classical and opera, “Habanera from Carmen” is one of my favorites. Also nature, I live for the outdoors I find beauty in so many things around me.
Name 3 things you are thankful for, my perfect husband, a supportive family and my two labs
What is the best compliment you have received on your photography? I brought one client to tears because she loved her photos so much.
What is one thing your clients should know about you? I’m very laid back, it takes a lot for me to get upset. I also change my hair cut and color very often!
Any advice for brides trying to decide whether or not to trash the dres? There are many degrees of “trashing” a dress. You can go mild if you don’t want to totally ruin your dress or you can go all out and throw it in the garbage when we’re done!

Favorite place to shoot? The park near my house, it has everything, trees, water, bridge, and cattails

How would you describe your style? contemporary

Best part of being a wedding photographer: The excitement of the day! The beauty of everyone and everything

Would you trash your dress? Oh yeah! Just give me a couple of months to fit into it again.

What advice do you have for future brides? Let loose after the ceremony. Don’t be afraid to be a little creative and have some fun with your dress. You ‘ll only wear it once!!

What advice do you have for other photographers? Never stop learning. Never stop striving for what you want, your goals for your business.

I have never… Missed a wedding! (Don’t jinx me!)

I’m looking forward… to photographing someone famous!I kind of did already, but I want someone REALLY famous!

I would like to meet… other photographers with great ideas and creativity

I’m addicted to… photoshop! I can work on one image for hours. It’s like a painting, where you feel like it’s never finished.

Why/How did you decide to go into photography It started in High School, and college. I enjoy it so much! It’s become such a passion for me.

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now? having a commercial building for my business.

Who do you admire most? My father-in-Law. We never knew what an amazing photographer he was until he passed away. We found hundreds of photos that were taken in Okinawa, Japan, during the war. They’re brilliant!

What makes a perfect trash the dress session? A willing and creative participant

Where do you get your inspiration from? Other photographers, and they’re websites

Name 3 things you are thankful for My family, friends, and talent

What is the best compliment you have received on your photography? Two actually. The first one was when Seventeen Magazine called me from New York to shoot a fashion show for Macy’s. I was stunned! I guess websites really work! The second thing just happened a couple of weeks ago. My printing company, Collages.net called me to tell me they want to feature some of my photos for their upcoming ad in The Knot magazine. Again, I was stunned, and honored. They said that they chose the top 5 photographers in the twin cities to put in their ad. Awesome!!

What is one thing your clients should know about you I’m very casual. I don’t like uptight affairs. The people that usually book with me, have a similar style, and are pretty casual themselves. I like to keep things calm under pressure.

Any advice for brides trying to decide whether or not to trash the dress Just do it! You only wear it once!
